About the Munich School of BioEngineering
The Munich School of BioEngineering (MSB) is an interdisciplinary, cross-departmental research center within the Technical University of Munich (TUM). At the MSB researchers from a variety of academic disciplines work together to build foundations for new ways to diagnose and treat diseases and for technologies that compensate for physical disabilities. The MSB offers a wide variety of possibilities for interdisciplinary education in Bioengineering, Biomedical Technologies, Medical Physics, Medical Informatics and related subjects at both the Master's degree and Doctoral levels.
What is Bioengineering?
Bioengineering combines the findings and approaches of various disciplines such as Medicine, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Sciences in the interest of developing leading-edge procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and for the compensation of physicsl disabilities. In Bioengineering researchers apply engineering science to develop innovative molecular and tissue structures, formulate new procedures for medical imaging and create various new protheses.
Two aspects characterize work in the field of Bioengineering: Here researchers work together very closely across the boundaries of their individual subject areas. At the same time all developments have to fulfill the real demands of actual medical practice and have to be easy to integrate in everyday medical activities.
Bioengineering at the Technical University of Munich
Researchers at the Technical University of Munich work in all fields relevant to Bioengineering, distributed across various faculties. TUM is one of the few technical universities in Germany with both a School of Medicine and its own university hospital. Working in numerous cross-departmental projects, researchers develop solutions for the medicine of the future. The mission of the Munich School of BioEngineering (MSB) is to promote exchange among researchers and to foster education in the field of Bioengineering. The MSB is organized as an Integrative Research Center, i.e. as an interdisciplinary cross-departamental institution of the Technical University of Munich. On both the Master's and the doctoral level, the MSB provides a variety of options for an interdisciplinary education in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, medical physics, medical informatics and related fields. For Doctoral candidates, the MSB maintains its own Graduate Center, the Graduate Center BioEngineeering (GCB). The newly established interdisciplinary Master's degree program " " prepares students for career activities in research and industry in fields such as Biomedical Technology and Medical Physics.
Our biomimetics team supports interested parties across a breadth of academic disciplines in pursuit of bioinspired technology and innovation. Its mission is to spread awareness, provide information, tools, and method know-how, and, where feasible, facilitate the formation of interdisciplinary student, faculty, or startup teams. The well-established German-language lecture series (Ringvorlesung Bionik) attracts students from technical and life science disciplines alike. Similarly, there has been support for a number of on-going research initiatives via the most recent biosinspired idea competition.
Central building in Garching
The administrative offices of the MSB and the Graduate School of BioEngineering are located in the central on the Garching Campus, together with the offices of several research groups and a variety of laboratories and research equipment. The is also operated in the MSB building: Unique worldwide, the MuCLS is a compact accelerator facility that generates high-quality x-ray radiation for a variety of experiments. A lecture hall, a seminar room and a spacious entry hall provide ample room for lectures, seminars and various other event formats.

At the MSB Open Day interested parties can tour the laboratory facilities and learn about ongoing activities in the field of Bioengineering in dialog with the researchers.
The MSB will gladly organize guided tours for interested groups of students and researchers that can be tailored to meet the specific interests of the participants.
