Abstract: Cochlear implants (CIs) aim to restore the sense of hearing for profoundly hearing-impaired children and adults. However, accurate pitch representation remains a considerable challenge even in modern implants. Following the tonotopicity principle, the pitch ranking of CI electrodes usually reflects their ordering along the cochlea. Nevertheless, pitch ranking in our study resulted in ambiguous pitch responses depending on the presentation order of the two electrodes to be compared. This finding was reproduced in an experiment with normal-hearing (NH) subjects using bandpass filtered white Gaussian noise as stimuli. The results show that falling pitch contours reach significantly higher performances in the apical region in CI users and NH listeners. Conversely, rising pitch contours performed better at more basal locations in both groups. An explanation for this could be that in broadband signals, only a specific middle-frequency region predominantly influences pitch perception and that memory effects, biased by pitch direction, result in a changed performance due to stimuli order and cochlear location.
