Abstract: Imaging techniques are an inevitable tool in many research fields. In many cases samples are either in transparent to visible light or need to be investigated without modifying or destroying the sample. For this purpose x-ray based computed tomography is the method of choice. It allows for obtaining digital 3D models of the studied specimen, which can be explored virtually at the computer. Thanks to the high x-ray flux at the synchrotron not only steady state processes and objects can be studied but also dynamic process can be investigated, e.g. melting of an alloy in an oven or loading a bone implant until failure. However also many unique object e.g. from Museum collections can be investigated without modifying or treating them. The received digital volumes of such precious objects can later be made available to other researchers. Latest developments in the imaging technique at the imaging beamline P05 at PETRA III at Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon will be presented along with examples from different research fields.
