Topic: Advances in Optoacoustic Biomedical Imaging: Focus on Microscopy
Speaker: Francesca Gasparin & Ludwig Englert (Ntziachristos Group)
Date and Time: Tuesday 09 July 2024, 1:00 pm
Abstract: Optoacoustic imaging, initially investigated in the 1980s, has recently advanced to support groundbreaking research in both preclinical and clinical applications. By combining the advantages of optical and ultrasound imaging, optoacoustic imaging is a label-free technology that facilitates the visualization of biomolecules typically hardly accessible through conventional microscopy. Initially, the label-free detection of hemoglobin and melanin in the skin was explored. Nevertheless, recent technological advances have also enabled the label-free visualization of essential macromolecules, including lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates directly within living cells, broadening the potential applications in life science research and clinics. The seminar will provide a comprehensive overview of recent technical advancements in OA imaging and highlight its significant breakthroughs in clinical and preclinical contexts. Attendees will gain valuable insights into innovative imaging technologies and their various implementations, which support a wide range of multiscale and multidisciplinary applications.
