Topic: From Images to Insights: Quantitative Phase-Contrast Imaging for the Analysis of Biomedical Specimens and Materials at a Synchrotron Source

Abstract: X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an essential tool in both biomedical and materials science research, offering a non-destructive means to examine internal structures. While classical CT only tracks the change in attenuation of X-rays passing through the material, phase-contrast imaging is sensitive to refraction caused by the material, creating much higher contrast for soft tissue samples. In our current research conducted at the PETRA III beamlines P05 & P07, operated by Hereon at DESY, Hamburg, we utilize a 2D-grating-based approach for phase-contrast imaging that allows for precise differentiation between materials based on their electron densities. Recent developments in this technique have enabled us to now image larger samples than was previously feasible, expanding its utility in scientific investigation of complex materials and biological systems
