MIBE Seminar: The Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP)

Title: The Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP)

Speaker:
Dr. Calin Alexandru Ur, Project Director ELI NP
Dr. Dan Stutmann, Principal Research Scientist, Medical Program, ELI-NP

Date and Time: Tuesday, 13 May 2025, 13:00

Abstract: The Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) facility, situated in Măgurele, Romania, stands at the forefront of photonuclear research. Equipped with a dual 10 petawatt (PW) high-power laser system and a tunable gamma beam ranging from 1 to 19.5 MeV, ELI-NP offers unparalleled capabilities for exploring laser-matter interactions, nuclear structure, and quantum electrodynamics phenomena. The facility's advanced infrastructure enables experiments that simulate extreme astrophysical conditions, investigate nuclear reactions pertinent to stellar processes, and probe the nonlinear dynamics of the quantum vacuum. By integrating state-of-the-art laser and gamma technologies, ELI-NP provides a unique platform for interdisciplinary research, fostering advancements in fundamental physics and potential applications in medicine and energy.
