Abstract:
Dislocations and subluxations of the patella (kneecap) are among the most common, acute pathologies of the knee joint in young and active people. They usually have multifactorial causes but one of the main reasons is a direct blow to the front or side of the knee that pushes the kneecap out of its groove. So far, the analysis of the problem has been carried out using X-rays and MRI images.
In this study, firstly, a 3D Model of bone and soft tissue is generated using the CT scan and MRI images. Then the required parameters to describe the anatomic and mechanical axis, joint angles and torsion are defined. Finally, a finite element simulation is used to show that modern computational approaches may provide essential additional information to the surgeons at the stage of preoperative surgical planning to improve the surgical outcome.
