At each event, two Principal Investigators (PIs) of MIBE will provide exciting insights into their research. After the talks, which take around 25 minutes each, there is plenty of time for networking.
Prof. Dr. Daniela Pfeiffer: Advanced X-ray and CT techniques for improved lung imaging
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ruland: Immune signals in cancer
Date and Time: Wednesday, June 5, 2024, 4:15 pm – around 5:15 pm, afterwards networking
Place: MIBE lecture hall (room E.126), Boltzmannstraße 11, 85748 Garching and Zoom
Advanced X-ray and CT techniques for improved lung imaging
Lung imaging is a central part of daily clinical work in radiology. This talk will cover advancements in image quality and diagnostics for CT and X-ray imaging, emphasizing spectral CT and darkfield X-ray imaging. Latest technical improvements and the clinical benefit will be highlighted from a medical point of view. Additionally, AI approaches will be discussed, showcasing their impact on improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.

Immune signals in cancer
The cells of our immune system patrol all tissues of the body to protect against pathogens and maintain organ homeostasis. Prof. Ruland and his team study how cells of the innate and adaptive immune systems recognize microbial pathogens and malignant tumors and activate immune responses through molecular signals. They also investigate how genetic changes that disrupt these signaling pathways lead to immune deficiencies, chronic inflammation, or cancer. One focus is placed on the malignant transformation of normal immune cells into leukemia or lymphoma cells. The overall goal is to improve the diagnosis and therapy of immunological and malignant diseases.
