At each event, two Principal Investigators (PIs) of MIBE working in related research areas will provide exciting insights into their research. After the talks which take around 90 minutes, there is plenty of time for networking.

Speakers:
Prof. Dr. Ruben Portugues:
Understanding sensorimotor control in a vertebrate using whole-brain imaging
Prof. Dr. Julijana Gjorgjieva: Learning in the developing brain at the cellular and sub-cellular levels

Date and Time:  Wednesday, January 25th 2023, 4:15 pm – around 6:00 pm, afterwards networking
Place: MIBE lecture hall (room E.126), Boltzmannstraße 11, 85748 Garching and zoom

About the Speakers

Prof. Dr. Ruben Portugues

Prof. Portugues is a neurobiologist studying sensorimotor control. His research group uses behavior, modeling, optogenetics, in-vivo electrophysiology and whole brain functional calcium imaging to dissect learning, memory and action selection in the larval zebrafish.

Prof. Dr. Julijana Gjorgjieva

Professor Gjorgjieva conducts research in the fields of computational and theoretical neuroscience. She is interested in how brain circuits become tuned to maintain a balance between constant change as we learn new things, and robustness to produce reliable behavior. In particular, she concentrates on two aspects of neural circuit organization, looking at how it emerges from the interaction of neuronal and synaptic properties during development, and from optimality and energy conservation principles that operate over the longer timescales of evolution.
