At each event, two Principal Investigators (PIs) of MIBE will provide exciting insights into their research. After the talks, which take around 60 minutes, there is plenty of time for networking.
Prof. Dr. Petra Mela: Additive manufacturing for cardiovascular tissue engineering
Prof. Dr. Oliver Lieleg: Mucin-based materials for improving medical devices, drug delivery, and wound healing
Date and Time: Wednesday, May 10th, 2023, 4:15 pm – around 5:15 pm, afterwards networking
Place: MIBE lecture hall (room E.126), Boltzmannstraße 11, 85748 Garching and Zoom

Prof. Petra Mela studied mechanical engineering at the Politecnico di Torino (IT) and earned her PhD in biomechanics at the University of Twente (NL). She led the cardiovascular tissue engineering group at RWTH Aachen University, where she also habilitated in medical engineering. Mela has been a visiting scientist at the British Heart Foundation, the University of Liverpool (UK), and Sandia National Laboratories (CA, USA). In 2019, she was appointed Professor of Medical Materials and Implants at TUM.
"Enabling Patients to Grow a New Heart Valve" - Article in Faszination Forschung (2023)
"3D printed, bioinspired heart valves" - Press release (2022)
Prof. Lieleg’s research focuses on biopolymers and bio-interfaces. He studies the properties of naturally occurring biopolymer-based materials (such as mucus, biofilm or cartilage) including their viscoelasticity, selective permeability, wetting resistance and lubricity. Moreover, he develops biopolymer materials for biomedical or biotechnological applications, e.g., as contact lens coatings or additives to construction materials.
