Personalized lung simulation models

Digital twins to improve treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can be a serious or even fatal condition. A team working with Wolfgang Wall, Professor of Computational Mechanics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Principal Investigator at the Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering (MIBE), is striving to improve the treatment options for ARDS with the help of computer simulations of the lungs.

With the start-up Ebenbuild GmbH, which Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wall, Dr. Kei Müller, Dr. Jonas Biehler and Dr. Karl-Robert Wichmann founded after many years of research at TUM, the researchers want to create personalized lung models. Their software for simulations aims to improve future therapy options by predicting certain parameters such as air flows or tissue strain during mechanical ventilation. This could provide a sounder basis for treatment decisions. The start-up is now receiving funding as part of a seed financing round.
